Measures against Marine Litter

Problem and its background

JANUS has been providing support for measures to reduce the generation of marine litter and to promote the collection and treatment of marine litter on behalf of the national and local governments since before the enactment of the national law concerning marine litter in 2009. Based on its experience, we also implement capacity building to domestic local governments and environmental research companies through training on the survey of the amount and composition of marine litter. In addition, we support international cooperation promoted by national government on marine litter issues.

Service/Our Capabilities

Research on the actual situation of marine litter and plastic pollution

In order to effectively and efficiently implement measures to reduce marine litter, it is essential to understand the actual situation of marine litter. To this end, JANUS investigates nationwide the amount and types of marine litter drifted ashore, and statistically analyzes the results to compile information that contributes to the estimation of the source of marine litter and methods for verifying the effectiveness of measures. We also have experience in collecting information on microplastics and the biological effects of chemical substances adsorbed on microplastics. Regarding microplastics, we have also collected information related to domestic and international policies. In addition, we are currently studying on the economic impact caused by marine litter.

Support for preventive measures of marine litter

About preventive measures for land-based waste, we have experience in analysis and identifying the waste management issues of shipyards, municipalities including remote islands, estimating the sources of marine litter, and raising public awareness and so on.
As for preventive measures against ocean-based waste, we have experience in analysis and identifying issues related to waste management by fishermen, preparing guideline for proper disposal, and raising public awareness and so forth.

Support for clean-up business of marine litter drifted ashore

In order to support for clean-up business of marine litter drifted ashore, JANUS has developed guideline for collection and treatment of marine litter. Moreover, in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of collection and treatment projects of the litter, we are statistically analyzing those data and compiling the findings that contribute to the improvement of marine litter collection efficiency.

Others

Utilizing the knowledge gained from the above achievements, we are also collecting and disseminating information at international conferences related to marine litter issues and supporting waste management measures in Southeast Asia. We also implement capacity building for local governments and environmental research companies through training on how to survey the amount and composition of marine litter drifted ashore and how to utilize survey data.
