Water environments such as oceans, rivers, and lakes not only play an important role in the Earth’s hydrologic cycle but are also very important to mankind because they are familiar natural environments.
Since its foundation, JANUS has provided consulting services specializing in surveys, analyses, and assessments of aquatic environments concerning various environmental problems and has made numerous achievements.
Surveys of aquatic environments cover diverse survey subjects, including physics, chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. They also utilize survey techniques such as satellite image analysis and field surveys.
These surveys are utilized in many professional fields, including environmental assessments, environmental monitoring, simulations, fishery compensation problems, biofouling countermeasures, and exploration for various resources.
JANUS offers end-to-end solutions designed to meet specific client needs, ranging from environmental survey planning to the execution of surveys, analyses, and assessments. JANUS also provides administrative support when various approvals are required to conduct surveys.
Water Environment Surveys
Physical and chemical environmental factors and biological data derived from in-field environmental surveys, laboratory analyses, and tests are analyzed to understand current site conditions and to predict future changes, which are then reflected in environmental conservation measures.
Water environment surveys, including analyses and tests, are designed based on objectives. Thus, our approaches, scope, frequencies, etc. are diverse. At JANUS, we offer end-to-end solutions optimized for each client’s objective, from environmental survey planning to execution of surveys, analyses, and assessments.
Marine Diffusion
In cases in which radioactive substances or other pollutants have leaked into the sea, JANUS is able to predict the diffusion of pollutants by calculating the flow field of the target marine area. JANUS is also able to predict the turbidity of the seawater and re-sedimentation of the seabed due to cutting during seabed excavation by calculating the flow field of the target marine area and applying particle tracking methods for soil and sand particles.
Through these technologies, JANUS offers services that support the conservation efforts for marine environments.

Biofouling Countermeasures
Organisms like barnacles and mussels that cling to coastal structures and jellyfish that appear at the water intake of power plants are referred to as biofouling when they impair the function of structures and facilities. Biofouling is highly resistant to environmental changes, and rudimentary measures may only inflate costs.
JANUS is engaged in a wide variety of unique technical developments, which enables us to evaluate solutions from a biological perspective. In addition, JANUS offers optimal approaches from a variety of potential measures based on our wealth of research, providing powerful support for client biofouling countermeasures.
Analysis of Satellite Images
Today’s monitoring devices (i.e., sensors) mounted on satellites collect information from the Earth’s orbit, but each sensor collects information on its respective target based on different principles. Data from such sensors therefore need to be processed by methods that vary depending on the sensor.
In accordance with client requests, JANUS obtains the required remote sensing data from satellites, properly processes and analyzes it, and then provides data including land cover, vegetation index maps, and sea surface temperature distributions.
