JAPAN NUS Co., Ltd. (JANUS) was established by a devoted pioneer, a trades worker involved in introducing nuclear power demonstration and commercial reactors for the first time in Japan. On June 3rd 1971, he established JANUS, the first consulting company in Japan in the field of nuclear power industry, through a joint venture between the former Japan Gasoline Co., Ltd. (JGC) and Nuclear Utility Service Corporations (NUS). Soon after, through the experience of developing nuclear energy in the United States, JANUS advanced to the environmental field, including environmental impact assessments, and continued to grow as “a consulting company offering comprehensive energy and environmental technologies,” as envisioned by its pioneer.

In the last 50 years, peoples’ lifestyles, ways of thinking, and societies changed dramatically; Japan was no exception and entered the age of globalization. In this globalized society, the Paris Agreement was adopted as a countermeasure against climate change-in addition to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-by the United Nations Summit in 2015. By respecting these aims, we move toward a decarbonized society that meets its social responsibilities.

The Paris Agreement restricts the increase of global average temperature to within 2 °C above pre-industrial levels, with an ideal goal of limiting it to 1.5 °C. To achieve this, various initiatives are currently being explored worldwide. For instance, ongoing studies include Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)-which separates and captures CO2 emitted from power plants and injects it underground-and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), which uses the separated and captured CO2. One R&D project on CCU technologies is fuel synthesis, which involves reacting CO2 with hydrogen from electrolyzed water using renewable energy. The latter opens up possibilities such as manufacturing chemicals without emitting CO2 and negative emissions technologies in which more CO2 is sequestered than emitted in the process.

JANUS will be at the forefront of building a decarbonized society, with initiatives like our nuclear-power-related consulting in full swing; we have been engaged these since our foundation by utilizing the experience and technical skills we cultivated in handling various environmental challenges. In addition, we will be engaging in work that further points to that direction, such as Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS), the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), projects for the decarbonization of renewable energy, and climate change adaptation.

As businesses around the world strive to make a difference simply by implementing SDGs, JANUS wants to expand beyond consulting. We aim to develop new business models created from cooperative projects through multi-stakeholder partnerships that solve complicated social problems and contribute to society as well.

In addition, to “unify technologies and knowledge on the world stage, and create a prosperous future for people and the Earth,” and determined to contribute to society, the JGC Group switched to a holding company structure in October 2019. JANUS will also further strengthen the role of the JGC Group as a consulting company and facilitate its growth.

In the spirit of “continuity and change,” we will work with you for a healthy and prosperous future. Thank you for your continued support.
