Amir Afzali is a nuclear safety, risk assessment, and regulatory affairs professional with more than 30 years of experience in the nuclear industry. His career has included senior technical and leadership roles with nuclear utilities, reactor developers, and consulting organizations in the United States.

His experience includes probabilistic risk assessment, risk-informed regulation, new-reactor licensing, regulatory strategy, operational risk management, and the integration of safety analysis into engineering and management decision-making. He has supported operating nuclear plants, advanced-reactor developers, and major new-build projects, including the licensing of Vogtle Units 3 and 4. He has also served as a senior advisor to U.S. nuclear utilities and industry organizations on regulatory modernization strategy, including engagement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the development of risk-informed and performance-based regulatory frameworks.

Mr. Afzali has worked extensively with Japanese nuclear organizations for more than two decades, including more than a decade as an advisor to Japan’s Nuclear Risk Research Center. During that time he has contributed to Japan’s post-Fukushima regulatory development, risk-informed decision-making initiatives, and efforts to strengthen the graded and proportionate application of safety analysis across regulatory activities.

He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Nuclear Consulting Group LLC, advising utilities, reactor developers, research organizations, and industry groups while continuing his work with the Nuclear Risk Research Center.
